Course Description:        This course is a review of word-level and sentence-level grammar, paragraph organization, paragraph development, development of the five-paragraph essay and appropriate vocabulary for academic writing.  Emphasizes writing as a process; develops analytical skills and critical thinking.  This course is for students who want to acquire an AA degree or enter a transfer program.  A minimum grade of “C”’ is required for consideration for ESL 102. 
Student Learning
Outcomes:                      SLO 1 – Students should be able to write a 5-paragraph, unified, coherent expository essay with sentence variety and appropriate grammar, supported by a selected reading.
                                        SLO 2 – Students should be able to edit their writing for grammatical correctness at the sentence level. 
                                        Demonstration of successful course completion:  Students are able to write a 5-paragraph timed essay on a given topic demonstrating competence in organization, development, support and grammar.  Students also need to pass a series of grammar quizzes and tests.              

Attendance:                 Students are expected to attend class regularly.  Eight or more missed classes will result in an automatic drop by the instructor or a failing grade.
Tardy:                          Students who are regularly late for class will be dropped from the class.  If a student is late 2 times, it will equal 1 absence.  A student is considered late from 6:10 to 6:29 pm.  A student is considered absent any time after 6:29 pm.
